A Concert Full of Innovative Surprises from the San Diego Chamber Orchestra
World Premiere of Concerto for Theremin
A Concert Full of Innovative Surprises from the San Diego Chamber
Orchestra
World Premiere of Concerto for Theremin
"This will be one of the most surprising classical concerts ever presented," promises
the San Diego Chamber Orchestra's Artistic Director, Jung-Ho Pak. Although there
will be traditional favorites like Haydn's Surprise Symphony, there will be many
unexpected elements to create a truly extraordinary experience for the audience,
or as Maestro Pak calls them, "our guests."
The performance begins with Marin Marais' Operation for the Removal of a Stone,
an explicit musical picture of an early 18th century surgery. Surgery was a public
event in 1725 when this piece was written, and Marais even provided commentary
to accompany his work so that there was no denial as to exactly what was happening.
Beethoven's little-known Irish Songs, extreme in mood, varying from cheeky to
wistfully heartbroken follow the Marais piece, beautifully sung by soprano Mary
Ann Carr, a local San Diegan. Although a lover of diverse genres within classical
music, one of Mary Ann's specialties is singing traditional Irish folk songs.
A perfect addition for St. Patrick's Day!
A highlight of the evening will be the world premiere of Composer Linda Kernohan's
Concerto for Theremin. One of the Orchestra's own musicians, oboe player Scott
Paulson, asked Ms. Kernohan to write this Theremin premiere because he knew she
could help relay both the beauty and the novelty of this unusual instrument.
Scott has been playing the Theremin since 1999 after he was first attracted to
the instrument from the sound tracks of television shows such as the novelty
vampire soap opera Dark Shadows and the animated series Scooby-Doo, Where Are
You! An award-winning soundscape artist, Mr. Paulson has performed Theremin for
television, film and theatrical productions, and he is the resident Thereminist
for The Teeny-Tiny Pit Orchestra, an ensemble that performs live music for classic
silent film screenings and traditional radio drama re-enactments.
Ms. Kernohan, a pianist as well as a composer, has performed in a wide variety
of venues, from a West Hollywood nightclub to the Basilica of St. Peter in the
Vatican, and she has appeared on ABC's World News Tonight with Peter Jennings
and other television shows. She was one-half of the Geisel Library Toy Piano
Duo with Scott Paulson from 2000-2002, and she is currently completing her Ph.D.
at the University of California, San Diego.
Haydn's Symphony No. 94, with its own wonderful surprises, will close the eventful
evening. Franz Joseph Haydn's well-known jovial personality and humor shine through
in this symphony. Often called the Surprise Symphony because of a famous moment
in the Andante movement, music lovers everywhere enjoy this beautiful music.
