San Diego Chamber Orchestra Announces:
Fan-tastic Finale, Felix Fan Cello,
Jung-Ho Pak, Artistic Director and Conductor, April 9, 10, 13, 2007
Daring to be original, Felix Fan is a cellist that challenges the stereotype
of a classically-trained musician, performing outside traditional venues and
working with some of the most influential people in entertainment. Fan
combines “smoldering bowing and grinding Jimi Hendrix-like bridgework,” says
ClassicsToday.com, and is a cellist not to be missed in performance.
Following two sold out performances at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Maestro
Jung-Ho Pak and the San Diego Chamber Orchestra present
the finale concert to Maestro Pak’s inaugural season. The concert, Fan-tastic
Finale, will be performed on April 9th in La Jolla, on the 10th in Rancho
Santa Fe, and on the 13th in Downtown San Diego.
In his first year as Artistic
Director and Conductor of the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Jung-Ho Pak has gained
attention for innovative programming and exhilarating performances showcasing
the talent and passion of the Orchestra, and this concert proves no exception.
Drawing from the repertoire of Tan Dun, a ground breaking composer spanning
the boundaries of classical Eastern and Western musical systems, Maestro Pak
has included “Eternal Vow” from the Academy Award winning score
to “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” Cellist Felix Fan will
be featured in this work along with the Orchestra.
The Orchestra features Fan once more in Franz Joseph Haydn’s Cello Concerto
No. 2. Haydn once wrote, “There was nobody in my vicinity
to confuse me in my course, and so I was forced to be original.” Perhaps
drawing inspiration from Haydn, Maestro Pak makes a strong and bold statement
in his last concert of the season: “Our society is going through a new
sense of stylistic and aesthetic awareness. Classical music can meet this new
sense of heightened aesthetic by beautifying one’s soul as well as their
external environment. We choose to be leaders in this evolution by featuring
our musicians as the center of the experience.” That begin said,
the concert and the season ends with a great favorite of the symphonic repertoire,
Felix Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony No. 4.
“The Orchestra musicians are the heart and soul of our organization,” states
Executive Director Winnie Briney, “and thus they are the voice and the
embodiment of the Orchestra’s new vision for classical music.”
The Orchestra’s performance will take place April 9, 7:30 pm at Sherwood
Auditorium in La Jolla; April 10, 7:30 pm at Del Mar Country Club in Rancho
Santa Fe; April 13, 7:30 pm at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Downtown San Diego. Tickets
range from $15 to $355. For tickets and information regarding upcoming
concerts, visit www.sdco.org or call 858-350-0290.
