A Star is Born - Local Talents Stun San Diegans
Gorden Cheng, Hei-ock Kim, Maria Lozano
After surviving two rounds, the three finalists of orchestra Nova's The Next Star amateur talent competition received cheers and standing ovations for their performances with the orchestra in three concerts, ending on March 8 in La Jolla. Internet voters and audience members at the three concerts were the judges - even the orchestra's musicians got to vote - in what transpired to be one of the closest races ever for a talent competition.
The Winner was Maria Lozano, a soprano and a graduate student at San Diego State university. Hei-ock Kim and Gorden Cheng, both pianists, were "neck and neck" with Maria to the very end.
"They're all winners in my book," said Maestro Jung-Ho Pak, "and we will support all three in their endeavors going forward." He went on to say, "We were all overwhelmed by the talent of these competitors." More information.

Lindsay Deutsch
Lindsay Deutsch May Lose Her Prized Violin Orchestra Nova's own principal guest artist, violinist Lindsay Deutsch, knew the minute she played the Sanctus Seraphin violin (made in 1742 in Cremona, Italy) loaned to her by Peter Mandell, a collector of fine violins, that it would change her life. "I had never played a great violin before - it was such a shock - the tones were so beautiful."
Sadly, though, Peter was severely injured in an accident and the conservators of his estate have called all of his violins back. After seven years of thinking of the violin as "an extension of my body," Lindsay is faced with finding another sponsor to buy the violin or losing it forever.
