Modus
Supper Club

Avenue, San
Diego, CA 92101

Modus
is a restaurant with a dual personality, a place where fine
dining meets an urbane, night-clubby vibe. The dining side
features high-backed booths in stitched black Leatherette,
dark wood and pale gray walls illuminated by creamy pendant
lights. The compact menu at Modus is not inexpensive, but every
single dish on it sings. The fruits and veggies are organic — sometimes
from a farm with a famous name - and the meats are naturally
raised.

Delectably creative French and Mediterranean cuisine stars at this
upscale oasis at the edge of downtown. With modern Mediterranean
cuisine at its roots, the menu features burgundy escargot, wild
mushroom agnolotti, artisan cheeses and osso bucco. Laurel’s wine
list has more than 200 painstakingly selected bottles and emphasizes
the Rhone region of France.

The decor is an inventive mix inspired by Native American art,
and the menu is best described as a spicy East-meets-Southwestern
explosion. Plates are huge and decorated like artwork with dips
and dots of wildly colored sauces. They're piled high with things
like "shredded
beet and carrot tumbleweed.” Steaks appear with towering rice
sticks. Skirts on Fire, Chef Deborah Scott’s signature dish, is
a charbroiled skirt steak with a fiery serrano relish — watch
out!

Bombay Exotic Cuisine of India
3975 5th Ave # 100, San Diego, CA

One of San Diego’s top Indian restaurants, the food here is fresh,
authentic and vegetarian-friendly. Wafting Indian music, colorful
Indian pictures, and the sound of running water via one of those
indoor water-walls all lend this place a soothing, exotic air. It’s
fancy enough to bring a date, but not so fancy that you'll compulsively
propose.

Bertrand at Mister A’s
2550 5th Ave #406, San Diego, CA

With a rooftop view of twinkling city lights and a menu to rival
San Diego’s best, Bertrand at Mr. A’s is a romantic way to celebrate.
Service at Mister A’s still is impeccable — perhaps the finest
in the city. Don't miss the Lobster Streudel, a starter of scrumptious
morsels of lobster and mushrooms encased in Phyllo dough and drizzled
with cognac lobster sauce. Also excellent is the seared foie gras
accompanied by currant and ginger chutneys.
