George’s at the Cove
1250 Prospect Ave, La Jolla, CA
858-454-4244
The blessed convergence of fabulous food and fabulous views puts
George’s consistently at the top. The menu changes with the seasons
— particularly since the advent of chef Trey Foshee in May 1999,
who makes good use of his direct line to the unsurpassed organic
produce at local Chino Farm in Rancho Santa Fe. Entrees seem deceptively
traditional (a pan-roasted chicken breast, a New York strip),
but are enlivened with creativity (asparagus and chanterelles
or Maytag bleu cheese-whipped potatoes). Spring’s menus burst
with tender, young vegetables, and a summer menu is likely to
feature Maine lobster paired with ambrosial sweet corn. The seared
ahi is always a dependable show-stopper. Chef Trey Foshee was
named one of America’s 10 best new chefs by Food & Wine magazine
in 1998.

Roppongi
875 Prospect St, La Jolla, CA

Named after Tokyo’s trendy nightclub district, Roppongi is a creative
burst of “Asian fusion" done by San Diego’s own wood-fired
pizza mastermind. The 23-item roster of tapas is so appealing that
many folks make a whole meal of the multicultural nibbles. Toasted
bruschetta and pan-seared foie gras share the list with Chinese
potstickers and Korean spare ribs, All-American onion rings and
sea scallop satay.

The Village Grille
830 Kline St, La Jolla, CA

It’s a rare restaurant that can be all things to all people. But
the Village Grille in La Jolla sure does a good job trying. You
want casual? The pretty little bungalow has a garden patio where
you can chill out and soak up the sun’s rays. You want elegant?
The marble bistro tables inside are centered with votive candles
and flowers; the soft lighting plays up the building’s lovely woodwork
and paned windows.
